Children between the age of 1 to 6 comprise the majority of the intoxicated patients. The natural curiosity at this age make them explore their surrounding puting them at risk of poisoning.

Several preventive measures can be taken to try to avoid intoxications in this age range. This measures includes:

o Putting all medications and substances of high toxicity potential on high places or under lock

o Use whenever possible child protective caps

o Avoid telling your children that medications are candy, they may ingest large amounts of pills thinking they are treats

o Put all substances in their original containers. Several cases of intoxications are due to substitution of substances from their original containers

o Do not serve food or medications at night without turning the lights on. At night medications may be confused with toxins.

o Know your plants. Put a sign on each of them stating their names. It will be easier for the poison specialist to ID a plant if the scientific name is known
